He defeated Kang Ho-dong, who was aiming for his fourth consecutive title at the time, in the semifinals and advanced to the finals, where he was evaluated as 'Kang Ho-dong's rival.'

Mr. Hwang was active in the wrestling world for over 10 years, winning the Cheonhajangsa title twice and the Baekdujangsa title six times, and announced his retirement in March 1998.
