Christmas Special ‘Good News from Hulbert’
Homer Hulbert, a promising 23-year-old who was born into a prestigious American family and graduated from Dartmouth College, boards a ship bound for Joseon in 1886.
After learning about Korea through Hulbert, he studied Korea and the Korean language by applying to become an English teacher at a middle school in Korea, just like Hulbert. Even now, while working as an office worker in the United States, he is participating in Hulbert's life journey by discovering records related to Hulbert.
Professor Hope May of Michigan Central University is also interested in Korean history through Hulbert and is working to promote Korea to American society.
This is because missionary Hulbert became known to the world after he organized Arirang, which had been spread by word of mouth, into five sets of Western-style scores and introduced them to the United States.
Arirang expert Kim Yeon-gap evaluates Hulbert's score as an amazing work that gave Korean Arirang global universality.
Members of the Arizona branch of the Hulbert Memorial Society are working hard to remember Hulbert and foster Korean culture in the United States in hopes of making his name more known.
